A guide to the new MOT test changes
Later this year, on 20th May 2018, to be exact there is going to be a number of changes to the way MOT testing in the UK is conducted. The main change is the three new defect categories which are minor, major and dangerous. Each fault category will determine whether or not a vehicle is roadworthy and safe to drive. It’s also becoming more difficult for diesel vehicles to pass the test.
Minor faults
These will be issued to vehicles when their defects won’t have an immediate impact on driver safety or the environment. Having only 4 minor faults means that a vehicle will pass its MOT test and get its certificate. However, the minor defects will be recorded on the certificate and online vehicle records.
Major faults
This will be given to vehicles if they have issues that could partially impact driver safety, other road users or the environment. Getting any major defect will result in an automatic fail. The vehicle will then need to be repaired and retested before it’s allowed back on the road.
Dangerous faults
If this defect is issued it means that a vehicle poses an imminent risk to drivers, other road users or the environment. Having this fault on a vehicle makes it undrivable. A vehicle with a dangerous fault will also need to be repaired and retested before getting back on the road.
Diesel vehicles
New changes are coming for diesel vehicles too with stricter rules being put in place. One of the new regulations is if any smoke is seen emitting from the vehicle it will automatically receive a major fault. The diesel particulate filter (DPF) will be checked during the test and if it’s been tampered with, it will result in an automatic fail. Many drivers remove the DPF from time to time to clean it and it’s not illegal to do so. However, it’s illegal to drive without a DPF.
